Activists Rally at U.N.
The Washington Post is reporting an Anti-Nuke, Anti-War Rally at UN.
It’s amazing how ignorant these people are, my favorite is:
“Shut down everything _ testing, nuclear weapons, the war,” said Vickie Downie, of Teseque, N.M., who came with a group calling for the closing of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki were designed.
Very specific so I can only infer as to what Vickie is getting at; I’ll address what I think is her primary concern, Nuclear Weapons Testing, specifically the United States programs.
There has not been a United States nuclear test since September 23, 1992 (code named Divider which was a standard test to ensure reliability and safety of the US nuclear weapons arsenal). On October 2, 1992 President Bush (41) signed the Hatfield Amendment into law and established a nine-month, unilateral nuclear testing moratorium. President Clinton subsequently extend the moratorium through September 1994 and then through September 1996. The United States is the first country to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty on September 24, 1996. Though it has yet to be ratified, monitoring stations have been placed all over the US and its territories (you can get a full list from http://www.ctbto.org/).
Like it or not, nuclear weapons are a necessary evil, during the arms race of the cold war the US needed to ensure that if it was ever attacked with nuclear weapons the response would be so unthinkable that no one would dare attempt it. Unfortunately there are nations out there (North Korea) who still need this reminder. While, I feel the amount of nuclear weapons the US possess I am confident in the security and procedures in place to ensure their safety.
As far as shutting down LANL goes, it makes little since one of their jobs is certifying that the nation’s nuclear weapons remain safe and reliable without underground testing. Of their other research areas, I think the one most interesting to Vickie would be their Nuclear Nonproliferation division.
I’m not sure as to which war Vickie is referring to, I assume the ‘War on Terror’ though we’re technically not at ‘war’. Not sure why anyone would be against stopping terrorists, she is obviously misguided.
Longtime disarmament advocate Dr. Helen Caldicott said Russia and the United States are the real “rogue nations” and have enough weapons to destroy humankind.
“Let’s for God’s sake talk about the real moral issues of our time,” she said. “Not stem cell research, gay marriage or abortion. Let’s talk about whether or not the whole of the world survives, life on the planet survives.”
That’s fine and dandy if you think “that the male of the human species has unbridled bloodlust” and that “young men rushed off to battle in the first World War. So eager were they to participate in the noble act of killing that they lied about their age.” Those are her own words from a speech entitled “Men: Natural Born Killers”.
Dr. Caldicott is a rabid anti-war feminist who loves spouting off half truths and outright lies, I’ll have an article coming up about her antics later don’t you worry. He reasoning, by her own admission, for being against nuclear weapons, and probably men, in the first place was from a fictional book she read at age 15 (Neville Shute’s: On The Beach).
Okay, one more quote from Dr. Caldicott, this is a gem
“Scientists who work for nuclear power or nuclear energy have sold their soul to the devil. They are either dumb, stupid, or highly compromised… Free enterprise really means rich people get richer. And they have the freedom to exploit and psychologically rape their fellow human beings in the process… Capitalism is destroying the earth. Cuba is a wonderful country. What Castro’s done is superb.” – Caldicott quoted by Dixy Lee Ray in her book Trashing the Planet (1990) “.
There are so many things wrong with that quote but the last one is just priceless; feel free to see how much Castro has done with Cuba.
And finally…
For others it was a chance for new experiences and to raise their voices in a global coalition. Seventeen-year-old Wesley Davis, of Ava, Mo., was making his first trip to New York, accompanied by his mother as he spoke out against nuclear weapons.
“Before this, I’d never even seen the ocean,” he said. “Walking with people from all different countries, it’s overwhelming.”
I think this kid is probably more qualified that Caldicott to speak on the issues, oh no… He’s a man, sorry. I have an idea, how about you educate your child on the facts instead of dragging him to a convention of rabid “anti-war” fanatics.
